Responding to the Buzzfeed story about Republicans privately panicking about the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency, senior editor for Business Insider Josh Barro sums up the extraordinary cowardice of the Republican Party:
The fact that the party is officially standing by Donald Trump, a bigoted demagogue who proudly declares his racism, xenophobia and misogyny at every given opportunity, is beyond a disgrace -- it is an unforgivable act of treason.
By refusing to do anything about Trump, the GOP is explicitly condoning his behavior and everything he stands for. While they may condemn him in private and hope he fails in November, it means absolutely nothing if they take no action, and they will be forever remembered for their extraordinary cowardice.
When you have supposedly honorable politicians like John McCain refusing to condemn Trump and publicly supporting him for president, it is safe to say that the GOP as we once knew it is finished.
What we have instead is a bunch of pathetic little men who are so used to bullying minorities and the most vulnerable in society that they have literally no idea how to deal with being bullied themselves. From the onset of the GOP primaries, the party has been bullied and bitchslapped by the rampaging Trump, who has spent a lifetime doing all the things Republican politicians wish they could be doing (getting rich, living in golden hotels, womanizing etc etc). While it has been somewhat satisfying seeing them wilt away so spectacularly, given the stakes, it is now a matter of national security and no laughing matter.
If the Republican Party wants to remain relevant in the future, it is going to have to confront Trump and put an end to his ludicrous presidential run, no matter the short term cost. Of course this won't happen, and whatever the result is in November, they will be forced to come to terms with their complicity in the biggest display of treachery in American history.
