You have to give it to Republicans -- literally any opportunity to attack the most vulnerable people in society, and they'll take it.
In response to the Dallas police shooting, presidential flop and Donald Trump supporter Dr. Ben Carson thought it provided a unique time to do some good ol' gay bashing. Linking to an article from right wing hack site Independent Journal asking why the White House didn't light up in blue for the slain police officers, Carson posted this to his Facebook feed:
Firstly, it takes a real homophobe to even think of this. Because what does marriage equality have to do with, well, anything?
Secondly, Obama has gone to great lengths to pay homage to the nation's police forces, particularly in Dallas where he spoke yesterday on the need to respect law enforcement.
Thirdly, the White House did not light up for the deaths of the children who died at Sandy Hook, did not light up for the deaths of the Orlando massacre victims, and did not light up for the 116 black men killed this year by police forces around the country.
Fourthly, Obama is dealing with what can only be described as an epidemic of police brutality against black men, so lighting up the White House for the deaths of four police men and not the hundreds (and thousands) of black men who have died as a result of law enforcement violence would precipitate even more animosity than there already is.
The White House lit up for gay marriage because it represented a historic moment in US history when gay people were officially recognized as equal in every aspect of the law -- something decent people acknowledge as being akin to the Civil Rights act of 1964 that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
One would hope that Ben Carson, an African American, would have some sympathy for the plight of gays in America given their similar history of extreme persecution and intolerance. Instead, he sees them as a convenient punching bag to be used to score points against president Obama.
Sadly this is unsurprising given Carson is supporting Donald Trump for president, a man who believes that "laziness is a trait in blacks".
How very sad.
