This, just 9 days after Omar Mateen slaughtered 49 people in a hail of gun fire (via Mic.com):
Democrats proposed two of the failed amendments. One would have barred suspected terrorists on the FBI's "no-fly" list from purchasing firearms, while another would have expanded background checks on gun purchasers. Republicans put up the two other measures which were less restrictive than the Democratic proposals.
Each of the four amendments needed 60 votes to advance, and none met that threshold.
Here's a proposal: Given we now know America's political representatives are going to do absolutely nothing about the country's never ending gun deaths, legal action MUST be taken against gun manufacturers. For every gun death in America, the gun company responsible for making the killing weapon must pay the victim's families $5 million. The Sandy Hook families are already taking up the legal fight and have a court date set -- but this must be one lawsuit of many.
The 2005 Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act gives gun manufacturers blanket immunity from liability, but, as The Atlantic reports:
The families’ lawsuit is trying to get around the immunity law by arguing not that the company sold its guns to specific people who would use them negligently, but that AR-15 style rifles are so dangerous that offering them to the general public is itself negligent.
That's one avenue of pursuit. The other more effective and longer lasting route is to get the 2005 act repealed, and that will take mass public pressure on Congress to do so.
This fight cannot be lost as there are simply too many lives at stake. Americans deserve better than this, and their elected leaders should be ashamed.
