Apparently in America these days enthusiastic displays of love are potential lawsuits waiting to happen. When 8 year old Sean Tarala excitedly jumped to hug his aunt Jennifer Connell at his birthday party in 2011, the two fell to the floor and Connell broke her wrist. Like any responsible, loving aunt would do in a situation like that, the now 54 year old Connell sued the 8 year old - who had also recently lost his mother.
Regardless of the obvious merits of Connell's case, a Connecticut jury took 25 minutes to decide against her $127,000 claim. Reports the NY Daily News:
Connell barely flinched when the jury’s verdict was read and then fled the Bridgeport courthouse without saying a word.
Her now 12-year-old nephew, Sean Tarala of Westport, Conn., was not in the courtroom.
“We just couldn't find him, you know, liable for what happened,” a female juror said of the boy.
Connell, in her defense, had found it difficult to hold her hors d’oeuvres plate at a cocktail party in Manhattan, making the jury's verdict rather unfair.
