For anyone serious about running for President, stopping an election campaign to do a book tour would be completely unthinkable. Given most Republican politicians aren't serious people in the first place, it should not come as a surprise that Ben Carson is putting his campaign on hold for an astonishing two weeks in order to flog some books.
Carson, who appears to be half asleep most of the time and incapable of constructing coherent thoughts, is pausing a campaign that - at least in the short term - appears to be going quite well. Carson will be promoting his new book, A More Perfect Union and is apparently scheduled to take part in book signings next week in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa.
While Carson appears to be an idiot in the political sense, he is still a highly esteemed brain surgeon so is no doubt aware of his limitations as a black Republican candidate. There is no way on God's green earth that an African American could get anywhere near the upper echelons of the GOP power structure. The Republican Party is jam packed with racist old white men who don't believe President Obama is a legitimate American and have no problem waving the Confederate flag in black people's faces. Carson is good for a bit of PR, but no one seriously believes he has any chance of usurping the natural heirs to the Presidency. Carson almost certainly understands this, but like Mike Huckabee, Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain and a host of tawdry hustlers who have used Presidential politics to hawk books and get speaking gigs, he sees a nice little opportunity to amp up his 'personal brand' and make a few bucks selling propaganda books to perpetually aggrieved Christian conservatives.
Carson for the most part doesn't seem to be too bad of a guy, but like many people who reach a certain level of accomplishment professionally, they cash in on their career success and try to make as much money as possible in the least amount of time. Carson is doing a pretty bad job of appearing interested in the presidential race and literally cannot stop making idiotic gaffes every time someone puts a microphone in front of this face.
And now we know why.
