You don't see this every day. In a moment of honesty, current House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told Sean Hannity on Fox News last night that the Select Committee, chaired by Rep. Trey Gowdy was essentially designed to take Hillary Clinton down in the presidential election.
Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right?" McCarthy told Hannity. "But we put together a Benghazi Special Committee....a Select Committee...what are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping.

And there you have it - a scandal over nothing, fueled by a desperate group of Republicans incapable of running for office on their own merit. Not only is the scandal itself completely ridiculous, the Select Committee is also a total farce. As reported by New York Magazine, "As of Monday, this Benghazi committee, which assembled in May 2014 to further look into the 2012 attacks on the American embassy, is officially the longest special congressional investigation in history after clocking in at 72 weeks."
The Benghazi Committee has also cost the tax payer $4.5 million, and it has yet to produce a singe shred of evidence that Clinton did anything wrong. As Adam Schiff (D-CA 28th District), a member of the Select Committee wrote in the New York Times, the Benghazi witch hunt is not only aimless, but pointless:
Since its formation, the Select Committee on Benghazi has been aimless and slow moving, not knowing what it was looking for or where. It has acted in a deeply partisan way, frequently failing to consult or even to inform Democratic members before taking action, and selectively leaking information to the press. After 16 months and more than $4 million, the committee has gained no additional insight into the attacks in Benghazi. It has nothing new to tell the families of those killed or the American people.
McCarthy has helpfully shed light on the real motivation behind the committee, so perhaps now it can finally be disbanded. Or in Republican language, continued for all eternity.
