If you haven't seen the hilarious trailer for 'The Wolf of Buzzfeed' you are missing out on 2 minutes of pure brilliance. I say this because I loathe Buzzfeed and pretty much everything they do, and if you're reading the Banter, you'll probably agree that it could well trump Fox News as the single biggest threat to journalism ever created.
The comedy group Half Day Today! hilariously pillories Buzzfeed CEO Jonah Peretti, comparing him to 'The Wolf of Wall St's' character Jordan Belfort, and ripping into the culture of shameless click bait 'journalism'. "It's simple," says the voiceover. "We target the easiest demographic target in the world: Facebook users"
Jonah Peretti has played this off on his Twitter feed, cheerily going along with the gag. He wrote:
And why would Peretti, the cofounder of The Huffington Post, give a damn given the company he has created is worth an estimated $200 million? When some believe Buzzfeed could top out at a billion dollar valuation, Peretti isn't likely to care much about whatever is left of his reputation.
The thing about being immensely wealthy is that you don't really give a damn about the industry you are wrecking, or the countless minds being ruined by the product you're making money from. Money solves a lot of problems, particularly ethical ones.
Just as Jordan Belfort gamed the financial system while destroying lives, Peretti has found the same formula for the internet and has screwed up an entire generation of journalists/young people who now have no idea what actual writing is. The 'Wolf of Buzzfeed' trailer nailed Peretti perfectly for this, and Peretti loves it even more.
What kind of person finds that type of painful accuracy amusing? The man who created fucking Buzzfeed. That's who.
