What the Republicans really need to convince women that they're not retrograde white men out to trample their sexual and reproductive freedom is strong words from a guy who believes that wives should submit completely to their husbands because the Bible says so.
Cue Mike Huckabee, talking about the Affordable Care Act's contraception coverage at today's Republican National Committee meeting in Washington:
"Our party stands for the recognition of the equality of women and the capacity of women. That's not a war on them. It's a war for them. And if the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control, because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it."
It would be easy to criticize Huckabee for saying something so jaw-droppingly offensive and backward, but really why bother? The reality is that every time one of these asshole Republican Neanderthals opens his mouth to spout off about anything involving women, it's time to pass the popcorn and listen closely for the sound of the Democrats doing ecstatic backflips down their office halls. Honestly, if Huckabee doesn't get a fruit basket from the DNC, somebody there is just lacking in initiative and imagination.
The thing is, guys like Mike Huckabee are a dime a dozen in the GOP, and the best thing about them is that they can always be counted on to prove it whenever they get the chance. This is, believe it or not, a good thing because it makes the battle lines crystal clear. You vote for the Republicans in 2014 or 2016, you know exactly what you're getting: 1914 and 1916.
By the way, Huckabee went on to say, "Women I know are outraged that Democrats think that women are nothing more than helpless and hopeless creatures whose only goal in life is to have the government provide for them birth control medication. Women I know are smart, educated, intelligent, capable of doing anything that anybody else can do."
Right, like go make him a fucking sandwich because God commands it.
