Almost two months after announcing that Chris Cuomo would anchor CNN's new morning show, the network finally announced its full casting lineup.
"Situation Room" co-anchor and congressional correspondent Kate Bolduan was named co-host on Thursday. KTLA morning anchor Michaela Pereira will join as the show's news anchor.
Jim Murphy, who will serve as the show's executive producer, said of Bolduan, “It is a surprising choice, and we know that.” Reports about the network's interest in Bolduan for the morning show did not surface until just this week.
If you were to create the perfect modern corporate news reporter, you'd pretty much come up with Kate Bolduan - a generically pretty, self confident over achiever who doesn't really say anything at all. Bolduan knows how to host a show (just check her bantering with Wolf Blitzer), but that's all she really is - a performer. Apparently, the executives over at CNN have been raving about her for quite some time, meaning there's no way she would ever do anything resembling serious reporting. This isn't to have a pop at Bolduan, it's just that what passes as major announcements within the corporate media are about as relevant to journalism as the new Justin Bieber album.
CNN's much publicized new morning show, crafted by executives to compete with 'Morning Joe' on MSNBC and 'Fox and Friends' on Fox News, will be like every other morning show ever produced within the corporate news media: Generic, personality driven fluff that covers the never ending horse race of American politics. They'll invite some interesting guests on every now and then, but the main purpose will be to get ratings at any cost.
A true surprise in the corporate media would be the hiring of serious reporters covering serious topics rather than the endless fancy graphics, new shiny news rooms and bland coverage of news that maximizes sensationalism and minimizes context. If CNN announced it was bringing in Chris Hedges or Jeremy Scahill to host their new morning show, that might mean something. Otherwise, it's just more desperation from a slowly dying industry that keeps trying to package and repackage the same nonsense with younger, prettier mouthpieces.
