Right Divorced From Reality: Obama the Marxist

Here's how Rush Limbaugh describes President Obama (via The Dish):

So the presidential campaign, here's the question. You got an incumbent, Barack Hussein Obama. Does the Republican nominee focus on what we all believe to be true, the guy's got a different view of the American tradition than all the rest of us? Do we say, does our nominee, does our campaign focus on portraying Obama as anti-traditional American values, do we say this guy is a socialist, this guy's models consist of Marx and Alinsky, do we go that way, do we point that out? Or do we say to ourselves, you know what, most people don't want to think that about their president. There's such reverence for the office that people don't want to think that even if they admit that they made a mistake in voting for the guy, they don't want to think that they've elected somebody who is essentially an enemy of traditional American founding values.

Limbaugh's consistent use of the words 'Hussein', 'Socialist' and 'Marxist' when describing Obama in his radio shows are designed to whip up fear and hatred of the President - and it works. His listeners honestly believe that Obama is a Muslim and a radical redistributionist regardless of the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Obama is a centrist Democrat enacting a very conservative economic agenda. He's hawkish when it comes to foreign policy, probably similar in mold to George Bush Sr, and mildly liberal on social policy (witness his lukewarm support of gay marriage and the repeal of DADT). How Limbaugh etc get away with this nonsense is beyond me. The problem is that the rabid right force the debate so far away from reality that having legitimate discussions about fiscal and foreign policy become almost impossible. People like David Brooks and David Frum represent the rational wing of conservatism, but they are lampooned as traitorous fiends bent on destroying the GOP from within. While Brooks and Frum do their best to ensure the long term survival of conservatism in America by engaging seriously with the Left, greedy demagogues like Limbaugh and Beck are smashing it to pieces - not in the name of their party - but for short term financial gain and vanity.
