The Senate Ethics Committee has appointed a special counsel to lead the investigation of Sen. John Ensign's affair with a political aide.

The announcement Tuesday is a dramatic turn in the investigation of the Nevada Republican -- which has been underway for more than six months - suggesting the probe will run deep into the 2012 election season.
