Oprah's Shiny Things

The great Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus once said: "Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants."

And if that truly is the measure of human well being, the West is a very, very poor place indeed. In America, material wealth is celebrated with religious zeal exemplified perfectly in Oprah Winfrey's 'Favorite Things' show where audience members get millions of dollars worth of designer consumer goods for just being there. Here's Bill Maher to put it in perspective:

There's nothing more disheartening than seeing adults get so excited over shiny metal objects - it's a sign of a society that has its priorities deeply, deeply screwed up.
