Former president Al Gore (well, at least he should have been) just gave a rousing speech at the Democratic Convention, putting Obama's campaign into historic perspective.

Gore compared Obama to Abraham Lincoln - America's greatest president - noting both men had similar experience before holding office, and highlighting their personal attributes: both great orators, both transcend party lines, and both opposed a war before it became popular (the Mexican - American war).

Gore set the scene for a transformational election with Obama representing a clean break from the past and putting America on a dramatically new course. Although Obama is not particularly progressive (more a pragmatist and a centrist), it will be a hugely relieving change from the Bush Administration and a potential McCain Administration, and Gore was right to highlight this. It won't be night and day, but the difference is enough to get excited about.
