For a man obsessed with ratings and winning, Donald Trump must be living in a never ending nightmare. Literally nothing the president does results in a boost to his popularity, and this includes bombing the Middle East, targeting minorities at home and holding giant parades for himself. Trump has tried every trick in the book to get the American public to believe in his greatness, but after three months in office his approval ratings are in the toilet and not budging. Reports the Huffington Post:

President Donald Trump received substantially worse ratings for his initial months in office than any other president elected to his first term since World War II, according to Gallup.

Even those presidents who went on to be unpopular generally enjoyed high ratings during their first months in office after their electoral victory. But Trump’s average rating since Inauguration Day is just 41 percent, Gallup finds, making him the only such president in its polling history to fall short of majority approval during his first quarter.

President Bill Clinton, the next-lowest ranked, had an average approval rating of 55 percent for that time period, while Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush enjoyed first-quarter ratings of 63 percent and 58 percent, respectively.

As Ed Mazza pointed out today, this makes Trump less popular than United Airlines -- a company responsible for the brutal assault of a paying customer who now needs reconstructive surgery to recover from his ordeal.

The horrendous polling numbers suggests what many observers have desperately been trying to articulate for the past 18 months -- that Trump is woefully unprepared and unqualified for the job and is making mistakes so basic that even his base is beginning to lose patience. Here was US News on white America's abandonment of their leader:

President Donald Trump's approval among the core groups that make up his base has begun to erode, contributing to his overall approval rating hitting a new low in Quinnipiac University's political tracking poll.

While Trump's support in his core constituencies – white voters, men and Republicans – had remained resilient throughout his lowest points on the campaign trail and into the first months of his presidency, Wednesday's edition of the Quinnipiac poll registered significant drops in all three groups since the beginning of the month.

This is very bad news for Trump given he has used up every strongman strategy available and cannot resort to the same tactics to improve his standing with the American public. In truth, the only thing Trump can do to turn things around is to come back to objective reality and try to lead as a sensible, pragmatic president. The media and public reacted well to his speech in front of Congress last month, mostly because he came across as a rational person who finally seemed to understand what being president actually means. Unfortunately, Trump resorted to type almost immediately after by claiming president Obama had wiretapped him during the campaign -- an accusation so insane his own cabinet couldn't defend it for more than a few days.

If you have paid attention to Trump's behavior over the past 18 months it is impossible to come to any other conclusion -- he is incapable of leading seriously because he is not mentally fit to be in office. He may swing back to reality on rare occasion, but for the most part he lives in a fantasy world that the public simply isn't buying any more.
