Britain may well vote to leave the European Union this week -- a move widely criticized by the international community and the British prime minister himself.
In a passionate and hilarious plea to the British public, John Oliver called for sanity and dismissed right wing arguments for the 'Brexit' that are, well, bullshit.
“The EU is not perfect," he told his audience. "It’s large, confounding, and relentless bureaucratic. Think of it like Gerard Depardieu: it’s an unwieldy European body that’s a source of great bewilderment. But Britain leaving it would be a huge destabilizing decision, so we would expect the Brexit camp to have some pretty solid arguments. Unfortunately, many of them are bullshit,”
Oliver also enlisted a barbershop quartet to propose a more intelligent option. Just watch:
As The Daily Beast points out,
President Obama, China, Japan, India, and the EU itself are all against Brexit, and groups like the British Treasury, the Bank of England, the IMF, the OECD, the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Oxford Economics all predict that Brexit would have a negative effect on the British GDP.
So fingers crossed Britain doesn't isolate itself from Europe based on easily disprovable nonsense coming from right wing ideologues. Because as Oliver says, “If leaving is so universally seen as a bad idea, then who the fuck is in favor of it?”
