Believe it or not, I would be extremely happy if, over the past 8 years, we could have spent a good deal of time on this site going after the Obama administration for its various sins.
Obama's drone policy, his legally questionable crackdown on whistle blowers and his signature free trade agreement that hurts working people are all issues that could and should have been examined in great depth during his presidency. While I believe Obama has been a great president, there is much to be critical of, and the media has a responsibility to hold his administration to account.
Unfortunately however, we have been otherwise engaged with what can only be described as feces throwing primates masquerading as a political party on the other side of the aisle and the mass movement of conspiratorial idiocy they have spawned.
I was glaringly reminded of this yesterday after I published a post fondly remembering President Obama's withering dismissal of John McCain after he dishonestly attacked him over his health care reform on live television.
This of course prompted right wing lunatics lurking on the internet to pounce and promote their warped view of reality in the comments section while bashing up liberals who don't know nuthin' about freedom. Here was one gun toting rugged individual's take on liberals in America:
Where to even begin with this? Given the entire premise of his argument is complete nonsense, the rest of it makes about as much sense as a flat earther's view of astronomy. Liberals in America are decidedly more right wing than they have been in the entire history of the country as we have seen with president Obama, who is policy for policy, more right wing than Richard Nixon.
The truth is, liberals in America have shifted so far to the right that no other industrialized nation on earth would regard them as liberals, let alone socialist/communists. Yet right wing blowhards are convinced Obama and the Democrats are the embodiment of North Korean style Marxism. This is a consistent theme in right wing circles, both in Capitol Hill and amongst voters, and it makes intelligent discourse almost completely impossible. Because how do you reason with people who genuinely think a 33.8% federal tax rate for the wealthiest Americans constitutes a radical redistribution of wealth? The fact is, taxes under Obama for the average family are lower than they have been in 50 years, so any talk of communism is just dishonest, it is literally insane.
We banned Mr Clarke from the commenting section after multiple posts that were both factually wrong, xenophobic and racist, but he serves as a useful reminder of exactly what liberalism in America is up against.
I yearn for the day when I can spend a good portion of my time doing substantive, critical policy analysis and going after whoever is in power. But those in power are today the only thing preventing the total collapse of civil society in America, so we must continue fending off the never ending stream of feces in the hopes that it will one day subside and we can get back to doing what media outlets are traditionally supposed to do.
