The Terrorism vs Gun Violence Statistics Are Mind Blowing

According to Republicans, Islamic terrorism should be Obama's number one priority, because apparently those 33,000 people who die from gun shots don't matter.

If you have paid attention to Right wing media outlets, the Islamic terror threat facing America is the most pressing issue facing the country bar none. Forget climate change wreaking havoc on the earth's bio-systems, forget cancer and forget blowback from countries the US has invaded: Jihad crazed muslim are the gravest threat to America.

Except of course, this is complete nonsense. While terrorism is obviously a serious threat, it pales in comparison to issues like gun violence -- an almost infinitely more dangerous plague infecting the country. Just consider this statistic, as reported by Lawrence Krauss at the New Yorker:

About thirty-three thousand people die each year from gunshot wounds. That’s about four hundred thousand people since 2001. By contrast, setting aside 9/11, and even including the San Bernardino shootings, only fifty-four deaths have occurred because of domestic acts of terrorism during that time. Even if you include 9/11, the total death toll from terrorism amounts to less than one per cent of the death toll from gun violence.

According to Republicans, Islamic terrorism should be Obama's number one priority, because apparently those 33,000 other people don't matter. They are simply a byproduct of "American Freedom" -- an ideological concept that now appears to be solely about the right to blast people's brains out with a shiny metal object. As Sarah Palin wrote recently:

Proudly Clinging To God, Guns, and Constitutional Rights to Keep 'Em
