Sarah Palin has attached herself to the latest non-scandal drummed up by Republican hacks with a serious vengeance. Not only has Palin been vocally calling for the complete destruction of Planned Parenthood, she is now sharing monstrously offensive and racist photos on facebook to make her point. Here's what she posted last night:

There are a couple of things worth pointing out here. Firstly, the photo (of unknown origin) is a disgustingly patronizing message that professes to tell African Americans not only what they should regard as racist, but how African American women should feel about their own reproductive organs. Secondly, Planned Parenthood did not 'kill' any black babies - they provided vital reproductive health care to millions of women that includes birth control, STD testing, screening for cervical cancers, and much needed community health education programs. This shouldn't need spelling out, but the abortions they perform (that make up only three % of Planned Parenthood services) are not in any sense 'killing' babies. Under the law, a baby and a fetus are two entirely different things. While pro-lifers don't want to accept any evidence on this, Planned Parenthood services actually prevents 620,000 unintended pregnancies each year, and 220,000 abortions - a far greater service to the fundamentalist agenda than Sarah Palin or any other religious extremist could ever hope for. Also, women make the choice to terminate pregnancies, not Planned Parenthood.

The confederate flag and Planned Parenthood have absolutely nothing to do with one another. One is a symbol of white supremacy and racist oppression while the other does great benefit to women and society in general. Conflating the two isn't just deeply offensive, it's stupid too. It is hard to see how Palin could be more offensive when promoting her pet issues, but her lifelong mission to perpetuate stupidity and ignorance apparently knows no limits so it should not come as much of a surprise.
