Potential GOP Presidential candidate Jeb Bush thinks climate change is happening, but doesn't know whether it is man made. Likewise, over 40% of Americans think it is a myth made up by liberal scientists. Meanwhile, Pope Francis - the head of the Catholic Church no less - is urging world leaders to take radical action on climate change, writing in a leaked papal letter to bishops:
Numerous scientific studies indicate that the greater part of the global warming in recent decades is due to the great concentration of greenhouse gases … given off above all because of human activity..
Unsurprisingly, America’s top scientific associations concur with Pope Francis, and have done for many years. The American Meteorological Society states that:
It is clear from extensive scientific evidence that the dominant cause of the rapid change in climate of the past half century is human-induced increases in the amount of atmospheric greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2), chlorofluorocarbons, methane, and nitrous oxide.
But then what to meteorologists, who study weather, know about climate change, right?
Seriously though, the knowledge that the Pope (who also believes in evolution incidentally) should cause even the most committed climate change denier to re-examine their position. Despite his concern for the poor and general humility, the Pope still does not accept gay marriage and is not pro choice - hardly a dyed in the wool liberal.
So if a man who heads up an organization that officially believes a Bronze aged Sky God impregnated a virgin with a living deity, recognizes climate change as being man-made, then so can you.
