John Boehner's Deal and How the Debt Ceiling Isn't the Real Hostage. You Are.

It can't be shouted loudly enough how ridiculously irresponsible this is. Not only have the Republicans halted the functioning of the government, but they're risking a worldwide calamity that will surely make your life extraordinarily difficult. If it's not due to an impending worldwide depression, it'll be because Obamacare has been sabotaged, risking eventual failure.

Speaker Boehner has apparently offered a deal to raise the debt ceiling by $1 trillion, lasting roughly six weeks, while demanding that the government remain shut down until he and the president can work out a budget deal. As Josh Marshall wrote, Boehner is keeping both hostages but refuses to shoot the debt ceiling in the head for another six weeks.

In other words, the debt ceiling fracas, as well as the shutdown fracas, will continue for at least another six weeks. But that's only if the measure passes, and there's no word as to whether there are enough votes.

Shockingly, this deal was essentially spearheaded by Erick Erickson. Yes, The Erick Erickson. What could possibly go wrong?

While I was on the Stephanie Miller Show this morning, the thought occurred to me: by risking a default on the debt while also attempting to sabotage Obamacare, the House Republicans are attacking you personally. And you should absolutely take it as such -- as a personal attack against you and your family. Just by merely threatening to do it.

It can't be shouted loudly enough how egregiously irresponsible this is. Not only have the Republicans halted the functioning of the government, but they're risking a worldwide calamity that will surely make your life extraordinarily difficult. If it's not due to an impending worldwide depression, it'll be because Obamacare has been sabotaged, risking eventual failure and, with it, the healthcare crisis in America will be exacerbated while millions lose coverage.

So it's not really the debt ceiling and a shutdown that's being held hostage. It's your well-being. It's your financial and healthcare future. This is for real. The House Republicans have their copious arsenal pointed at your head. At my head. Just when we've finally begun to recover from the previous recession, just when many of us can finally afford health insurance again.

November 8, 2014 can't come soon enough.
