Your Logical And Perfectly Well Reasoned Argument For Renting Over Home Ownership Is Dumb
Surrounding President Obama’s recent speeches about home ownership, mortgages, and the like, I’ve seen a return of commentary arguing that he’s getting everything wrong in not prioritizing renting over buying.
In the Vulcan world of cold hard facts this actually makes some sense, unfortunately in the real world of modern America, this is the kind of thing that falls on deaf ears.
It may not be rational or even make sense, but Americans want to own their own homes. Owning a home is the cornerstone of the American dream, which is what a lot of the people bashing him on this are always pushing to preserve.
If you’ve ever been to a Home Depot or other similar home supply superstore, I think you’d understand this better. Americans want to own a home, and no matter how you lecture them on the common sense of renting, they’re going to still want to own a home.
Now, we should have policies and rules in place to make mortgages safe and secure, but the idea that you’re going to transition the American dream to renting an apartment is the worst of wonks getting high on their own supply.
President Obama is on the other hand, a politician, and savvy enough to know that propeller-head talk about renting over home ownership would get a big thumbs down from aspirational Americans.
