The Real Wimp Factor: Romney Picks Paul Ryan

Mitt Romney is afraid of his own party. There’s no other sane reason why Romney would pick the otherwise lackluster Paul Ryan to share the Republican ticket with him. The true leaders of the Republican party – the Wall Street Journal editorial page, the Weekly Standard, Rush Limbaugh and company – have agitated for the Ryan pick, and like a good boy Romney did as told.

At this late date, when he should be turning the page on the primaries and focusing on the general election, Romney still needs to get conservatives on board with his lackluster campaign. As such, when he should be moving to the center and appealing to mainstream voters, he’s still having trouble convincing the base that he’s one of them (he isn’t, and never will be).

Apparently Romney is already running away from Ryan’s safety-net shredding roadmap. But it’s too late for that anyways. Ryan’s plan is the Romney plan, and his pick of a running mate cements that.

I actually laughed out loud when I heard news of the pick, because it cements just how afraid Romney is of the conservative base. It also shows that he sees the need for decisions that are just slightly below picking Palin to bring his reluctant base on board.

It really is good news for Barack Obama.

We also know what is on his tax returns. Romney not so much.

    • M2

EL, Mitt has asked that you stop the personal attacks. Asking him about his taxes now counts as one.

      Evil, vicious libruls!

  • Justanotherrighty

P.S. The Election of 2012 is not American Idol. No Styrofoam pillars, no “Yes we can!”. You guys have your pre-recorded comments about Ryan , but take a look around , and see who’s unhappy with Ryan on the Republican side … That’s right – nobody !
Besides, I heard from somebody that Obama convinced Milli Vanilli to lip synch !

    • Zython

Well, unless you include women and the elderly. But don’t let facts get in the way of a good soundbyte.

    • enlightened liberal

      We get it Obama’s black.

  • enlightened liberal

I wonder if Ryan gave his tax returns to the Romney campaign.

  • M2

These are from Fox News who are breathless today. Hilarious.

    Personal Factoids:

    • Born and raised in the community of Janesville; Ryan is a fifth-generation Wisconsin native.
    • Ryan moonlighted on Capitol Hill as a waiter at the Tortilla Coast restaurant & as a fitness trainer at Washington Sport and Health Club.
    • One of Ryan’s summer jobs in college was as an Oscar Mayer salesman in Minnesota, peddling turkey bacon and a new line called “Lunchables” to supermarkets – he even drove the “Wienermobile” once.
    • Ryan worked as a marketing consultant for his family’s construction business before being elected to Congress. The company — Ryan Incorporated Central — began as an earthmoving business created by his great-grandfather in 1884.
    • Ryan’s hobbies include hunting and fishing. He is a bowhunter and belongs to his hometown’s archery association – the Janesville Bowmen.
    • Ryan listens to Rage Against the Machine & Led Zeppelin.

    • Wilbur

He drove the wienermobile? Okay, that does it, I’m changing my vote.

      • Plunket

As opposed to Obama driving the Choomwagon.

Penalties for letting any pot smoke get out of the wagon for any reason because it was wasteful.

        That’s our president.

        • Wilbur

Seriously, Dennis, that’s the best reason for voting for Ryan that I’ve heard so far.

    • Justanotherrighty

Here’s what we know about Obama :
He got stoned a lot in Hawaii
lived in Indonesia for nearly a decade
might have gone to Columbia, and might have gone to Harvard, but he won’t release his records.
Oh, yeah, he got a doctor’s note to work in the White House.

Days worked in private industry : NONE

      • Wilbur

you forgot- “has served as president of the united states for 3.5+ years, made slow but steady progress on the economy, took a big step toward hauling America’s health care system out of the nineteenth century, killed OBL and decimated al Qaida, avoided the catastrophic mistakes of his predecessor, all despite a Republican opposition bent on opposing his every move from day 1.”

I’m sure you won’t repeat the oversight.

        • Justanotherrighty

No less than 8% unemployment for 40 plus months, continued using the methods from the Bush administration that he claimed were deplorable to finish the job started by Bush
And, of course, you ran out of energy right about the time you should have been reading this in the article:

Biden, of course, has a history of outsized comments. But two former Republican Senators are confirming the gist of the charges (though both have their reasons for holding a grudge against the GOP).

And while you’re at it, you can always go back in history through all the Republican administrations, when there was a Dem majority in Congress, and see how cooperative they were.
Since economic growth has been slower than it ever was under Bush, and unemployment has been nearly twice what it was under Bush, and new jobs have been barely enough to allow for population increase, you can’t even call his economic progress “slow but steady.”
And, this Election is about the Budget, and the Budget, and the Budget. And THAT’S why Obama can’t win – he can’t imagine smaller government or decreased spending.
          Oh, and neither can you.

          • Zython

THAT’S why Obama can’t win – he can’t imagine smaller government or decreased spending.

If that’s the case, then why has he shrunk the government and decreased spending?

To quote a certain arrogant loudmouth:

If you believe that, you’re a moron. If you think I’m going to believe it, then, like Bill Burton, you’re a goddam liar !

            End of quote.

          • Zython

Yeah, the new limit seems to be 1 link per post before flagging for spam. Annoying, huh?

          • Wilbur

Still in moderation. Oh well, suffice it to say that every word of Frank’s post here is a fail, including and and the.

        • SaveFarris

Your definition of “progress” is laughable. By Obama’s own metrics, we’re failing miserably. He promised that we’d currently be under 6% unemployment and have a $600 billion deficit. Instead, we’re at 8.3% and $1.2 trillion. FAIL.

          • M2

Another genius right wing study in which if you refuse to factor in reality, you get just the outcome you want.

oh, those Weekly Standard kids sure love to play with numbers.

          • Wilbur

Farris here is why this claim you keep making is completely dishonest.

I’m sure you’ll keep making it, though, because you’re not an honest person.

          • SaveFarris

Are you REALLY trying to claim the “honesty” mantle when the past 3 weeks has been nothing but:

Mitt Romney gives your wife cancer
Mitt Romney hasn’t paid taxes in 10 years
You didn’t build it. I didn’t say it.

From your link: “The incoming administration did predict that unemployment would peak at just under 8 percent if Congress approved the stimulus package and that it would be about 6 percent now.”

The rest is just the ususal PolitiFact “If a Republican said it, we’re going to strain gnats to make it false” garbage of trying to argue a distinction between a promise and a prediction.

          • Wilbur

I knew you would miss the point, what I’m not sure about is whether you’re doing so on purpose.

The point is that the forecast you keep trumpeting was made before the figures for the last part of 08 were known. When those figures came in it was evident that the economic cesspool that Bush and the republicans left behind was much deeper than previously thought.

As for your other lies/errors (I’m being generous because it’s Sunday):

Mitt Romney gives your wife cancer
Mitt Romney hasn’t paid taxes in 10 years
You didn’t build it. I didn’t say it.

Neither I, nor Obama, nor his campaign, nor any PAC supporting his reelection, nor Harry Reid, ever said any of those things. It’s very telling that you can’t make an argument misrepresenting and distorting your opponent’s position.

          • Wilbur

            typo: without misrepresenting and distoriting…

          • Plunket

Neither I, nor Obama, nor his campaign, nor any PAC supporting his reelection, nor Harry Reid, ever said any of those things. It’s very telling that you can’t make an argument misrepresenting and distorting your opponent’s position.

Gawd. You’re unbelievable, the shameless levels you’ll lower yourself to in order apologize for your party’s sleaziness.

If you’re not here playing Rachel Maddow, wondering if you should be more like Ed Schultz, then you’re playing Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, who couldn’t tell you if the Super Pac that ran the Joe Septic ad were Democrats…

DNC Chair Doesn’t Know Political Affiliation Of Obama Endorsed Super PAC

Oliver tells you to be a-holes, and then you guys agree to be a-holes. Then when called out for being a-holes you hold your hands up and deny being a-holes. “Who, us?”

You want us to use nice-guy qualifiers like, ‘Dems essentially blamed Septic’s wife’s death from cancer on Romney’. Or ‘Dems implied Septic’s wife’s cancer was due to Romney laying him off? Is that it? Would that make you happier, Rachel?

“Harry Reid just asked the question if Romney paid zero taxes, he didn’t actually say he did! You’re lying to accuse him of saying Romney paid zero taxes!!!”

“Obama may have said “You didn’t build that”, but he meant for ‘that’ to be ‘roads and bridges, so it’s a lie to distort his actual words for what we think he meant to say”.

You’re the one being dishonest, and you’re not even good at it. It’s because you struggle so much with what persona you want to play every time you post here.

          • SaveFarris

“The point is that the forecast you keep trumpeting was made before the figures for the last part of 08 were known.”

“We had faulty intelligence” didn’t work for the last guy and it won’t work for you.

Either you made a promise you weren’t able to keep OR your team is grossly incompetent and unable to accurately judge the situation. Your choice!

          • Wilbur

            italix fix?

Conversing with Dennis and Ferris I feel like the first Cro-Magnon having a conversation with his neighbor the Neanderthal.

            -Fire bad! fire bun!
-Well you do have to be careful with fire but you can do some really neat things with it too, so sometimes fire is good!
            -No understand! Fire not burn?
            -Yes, fire can burn you.
            -Burn not bad?
-Well, yes, it’s bad to be burned, but…
-Fire bad! Cro-magnon lie! Try trick Neanderthal!

Yes, Ferris, there is a real, significant difference between an economic forecast and a promise, at least economists and policy analysts think so.

Yes, Dennis, it is significant that Harry Reid has not personally vouched for what his source is alleged to have said about Romney’s taxes.

And Dennis, I realize you probably spend a lot of time thinking about what ‘persona’ you are going to project in your comments on other people’s blogs, but trust me, most people don’t. I yam what I yam and I sez what I thinks (except when being ironic or sarcastic). Frankly I don’t watch enough Rachel Maddow or Ed Schultz to know who I sound like.

          • Wilbur

            try again with the italix?

          • Zython

Are you REALLY trying to claim the “honesty” mantle when the past 3 weeks has been nothing but:

Assuming those are lies. When compared to Rmoney’s record, yeah, we still have the moral high ground.

    otherwise “lackluster” Paul Ryan

[ Insert vastly overused Princess Bride Quote Here ]

As such, when he should be moving to the center and appealing to mainstream voters, he’s still having trouble convincing the base that he’s one of them

Which is why Romney announced he’s evolved on gay marriage, approved backdoor amnesty, gutted welfare’s work laws, sends 14 fund-raising emails a day asking, in fact begging, for spare change … Hmmm, remind me again which candidate is acting like he hasn’t sewn up his base yet.

    Ryan’s safety-net shredding roadmap.

We just passed 100 million recipients of Federal assistance. Unless the safety net is pruned (quickly), there won’t be a safety net. For anyone.

  • Plunket

    Iowahawk:

Paul Ryan represents Obama’s most horrifying nightmare: math.

    • Wilbur

      You mean like this math?

(I know, I know, Wall Street Journal, what a left-wing rag, yadda yadda…)

      • Plunket

You just googled a couple things and came up with a guy from the WSJ and thought you hit gold, didn’t you, Wilbur?

Rex Nutting is an idiot who thinks Obama is a responsible small-government spender, and he had no clue what baseline spending was when he wrote the deceptive article praising Obama’s spending that gave Dems goosebumps. You guys would be better off sending a squadron of investigators from the MSM to go combing through Paul Ryan’s garbage like Obama did with Palin than you would referencing Nutter in the budget argument.

        • Zython

Rex Nutting is an idiot who thinks Obama is a responsible small-government spender

I guess idiot = someone telling the truth in conservative-land.

        • Wilbur

There were a lot of links I could have posted, Dennis. I chose the one that would make the B.O.-trio of you, Frank, and Farris look like the biggest partisan douchebags when one or more of you made your inevitable hackish objections.

More math. Have at it you eunuch-jelly of mathematics thou.

          • Plunket

You had a lot of links you could have posted, but you saw ‘Wall Street Journal’ and looked no further to see that the articles he had written had been discredited and thought you hit gold with something you could jeer about simply because of who he writes for.

That’s nothing more than a pure admission of shameless, dishonest hackery, Wilbur.

Wilbur: “Quick, I’ve got to find a link to dispute Dennis’ last post. Oooh, Wall Street Journal, yeah, I’ll go with that one.”

            Douche.

          • Wilbur

Dennis Plunket: bringing you substance-free meta-bloggy asshattery since god knows when.

“Slimed by right-wing hacks” /= “discredited”

            More math. Oh my!

  • M2

Doesn’t seem like they learned anything from McCain/Palin. Ryan’s infinitely more popular with the base than Mitt already. I’m sure “Can we just switch the ticket around?” articles are already being printed.

    • db

Actually M2, I distinctly heard Romney introduce Ryan as the “next President of the United States”. Either Romney’s quitting or he’s thinking of 2016.

  • enlightened liberal

Congratulations President Obama on a second term!
