Saudi Arabia Threatens to Build Nuclear Weapons

According to a report in the Guardian, the Saudi government is planning on building nuclear capabilities in response to Iran's proposed nuclear program:

A senior Saudi Arabian diplomat and member of the ruling royal family has raised the spectre of nuclear conflict in the Middle East if Iran comes close to developing a nuclear weapon.

Prince Turki al-Faisal, a former Saudi intelligence chief and ambassador to Washington, warned senior Nato military officials that the existence of such a device "would compel Saudi Arabia … to pursue policies which could lead to untold and possibly dramatic consequences".

He did not state explicitly what these policies would be, but a senior official in Riyadh who is close to the prince said yesterday his message was clear.

"We cannot live in a situation where Iran has nuclear weapons and we don't. It's as simple as that," the official said. "If Iran develops a nuclear weapon, that will be unacceptable to us and we will have to follow suit."

This game of Mutually Assured Destruction between two unstable and brutal dictatorships is one of the most troubling prospects in human history. There is enormous instability in the Middle East, and one wrong move by a key player could tip the already war torn region into absolute chaos. Not only would there be serious upheaval in the Middle East should the two countries engage in a race to build nuclear weapons, but oil prices would spike even higher potentially triggering a world wide recession.

Nuclear war is the gravest threat to human survival, and it stands to reason that the more nuclear weapons there are around, the bigger the chance of someone using them are. There is no reliable defense for a nuclear weapon (despite what the Pentagon says), so countries must continually build bigger arsenals in order to maintain the upper hand. Given the enormous damage a single warhead would do, there would never be a winner in a nuclear confrontation. Hence the logical conclusion that the only reliable strategy for guaranteeing our survival is to stop building them altogether.
