Levi Johnston's claim that Sarah Palin wanted him to give up his child to her is another twist in the thickening plot that surrounds Alaska's first family. It's white-trash, Jerry Springer style gossip that has the tabloids whooping for joy and the pundits scratching their heads as to how to cover it. While the accusation makes for great headlines, it is impossible to verify, and difficult to take seriously. That isn't to say the rumor is false, it's just irrelevant and a distraction to the real issue. As Andrew Sullivan points out, the veracity of Levi's claims are really a side note to the burning question: Why on earth did John McCain pick this woman knowing (or not knowing) the internal strife within her family?

That's why clearing up this increasingly surreal set of tabloid stories
matters. It's not about Palin. It's about McCain and the GOP. Did they
know any of these accusations before they selected her? And how did
they get the MSM to acquiesce to no press conference and no questions
about this core absurdity? Levi's new claim may be untrue, or a shot
across the bow about more to come, or true only in this respect, i.e.
Tripp. But if he is telling the truth - and he has been admirably
straightforward for much of this psychodrama - then Mrs Palin has some
'splaining to do. And so do Mr McCain and Mr Kristol.

The only conclusion I can come up with is that McCain either didn't know or didn't care that the Palin family ran like a bad episode of 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians'. In either case, it is a terrifying indictment of his judgment, and a huge relief he was thoroughly beaten by Obama.
