Glenn Greenwald points to Rahm Emmanuel's 'win at all costs' approach to politics as being a serious road block to substantive political reform:

The mindset of Rahm Emanuel, and its precepts are as toxic as they are familiar:The only calculation that matters is maximizing political power. The
only "change" that's meaningful is converting more Republican seats
into Democratic ones. A legislative "win"is determined by whether
Democrats can claim victory, not by whether anything constructive was
achieved. The smart approach is to serve and thus curry favor with the
most powerful corporate factions, not change the rules to make them
less powerful.

The recent Democratic strategy, exemplified by operatives like Emmanuel, has been to whore themselves out to corporate interests as much as the Republicans has given them moderate electoral success in the short term, but has contributed to the massive apathy towards politicians in general.

If the progressive wing of the Democratic Party decides to flex its financial muscles (just look at their contribution to Obama's election), this type of calculated subservience to corporate interests can be sidelined to make way for a new type of politics in America. People will get involved, interests will be truly represented, and the big money of corporate America will finally meet an adversary capable of matching its overwhelming power. Until then, Emmaneul style attrition politics will remain, and nothing will get done.
