The phenomenon of hypocrisy in politics knows no limits, particularly when it comes to polls, party and public mood. Republicans like George Bush and John McCain were staunch isolationists when it came to wars waged by the Democrats (Somalia and Kosovo), then transformed into Wilsonian nation builders when it came to their own wars. The inability to apply consistent values over time is the feature of a successful politician, and McCain is perhaps the best example.

In this remarkable clip, John McCain is unknowingly read back one of his own quotes by the late Tim Russert, which he vehemently disagrees with. That he keeps a straight face is a testament to his moral center (or lack thereof), and a reminder of how expendable other people's lives are in the name of partisan politics:
